Can DMs Work for You? Making Genuine Connections That Benefit Your Business with Anna Furu
In today’s post, I’m recapping my conversation with Anna Furu. Anna is someone I’ve coached (yay!) and is a business mindset coach who is truly brilliant at what she does. As a business and mindset mentor, she has plenty of experience helping people navigate their business growth and support their mindset struggles.
That means she has a lot of value to share. She also has a wonderful repeatable process that she uses to grow her business through personal, direct messages. I want you to tap into all that she has to offer, so let’s get started!
Anna’s Business Journey
Anna has been a coach for over four years. However, it took her some time to really find her niche and start generating serious income from it. For a while, she wasn’t clear on her messaging and marketing tactics. In fact, in the first two years doing it, she only made $550 (total!).
She was hustling, but things just weren’t working the way that she wanted. But when she started working with me, things started to change. Having a coach that didn’t treat her as a number helped a lot, and she started really learning about the business and money mindset she needed to have. It transformed her whole life and business.
In 2019, she launched a 1:1 program, but it was a flop. But, less than six months later, she raised her prices by $3k and was booked out. In her third year as a coach, she made $36k. Then, she crossed the six-figure mark in year four. What an amazing journey!
Discovering Her Quirkiness
It’s such a compliment to me that Anna credits me for helping her find and embrace her quirkiness. She really worked for her growth, but she found she was holding back. She was a teacher, and she was looking to leave the profession because she was burnt out and was thus losing her identity.
But what she was able to discover through embracing her quirkiness is that social media is about entertainment and sharing something valuable. She was able to start doing that in her own unique way through our work together, which really helped her business.
Growing Her Business Through DMs
As I mentioned above, Anna uses an amazing process to help grow her business through personalized DMs. While she shied away from reaching out to people via DMs at first, she realized it was a great way to show people she cared and to put the focus on them.
When she pitches these ideas to others, she noted that many of them push back. But DMing isn’t cold pitching or spamming people. So how does Anna help people get over that mindset?
Well, it all goes back to your why. Why do you sell your coaching? You need to be really clear on that and then have fun with it, avoiding a scarcity mindset. Anna’s best advice is to just do it a lot and make it genuine and fun. From that, it’s almost impossible not to get new clients. When you’re true to what you’re doing and enjoying it, it becomes contagious and magnetic.
Being Genuine in DMs
Anna shared how to start off with DMs and how to be really genuine with them. First, comment on their stories. They’re likely sharing something that’s important to them.
You can also like and comment genuinely on their posts. From there, DMs are the place to create that 1:1 connection with someone. Remember that the RIGHT way to go about things on social media is to be SOCIAL.
Also, remember that people can feel it when you’re being genuine. You want to make people feel special through these connections. And if you’re reaching out to someone who’s not as active on social media so it’s hard to know what’s important to them through stories, try scrolling through their feed.
Many people will post things in their life that they care about. DM and start talking about something they seem passionate about. For instance, if Anna was reaching out to me, she’d say something like, “Hey Meg, I saw your post about your dog Luna! What breed is she?” See how easy that is!?

Transitioning the Conversation
From there, you may be wondering how you can transition the conversation from casual to doing business together. You can start this by talking about the person’s goals within your area of coaching. By this point, people should trust you enough to talk about it.
This helps you understand what they want to achieve. Also as about their challenges in relation to their goals. From there, it’s time to pitch! This should be smooth and natural, with a respectful and simple pitch.
Simply ask them, “Would you like some help or support with that?” Yes, it’s really as simple as that! If they say no right now, point to free resources so they and get to know you more and reach out when they’re ready in the future.
For your last step, invite them to have a discovery call with you. Try saying, “Would you want to jump on a call so I can better understand your goals and needs?”
Coming from a Place of Service: The Bottom Line
As you use this process, remember that you’re coming from a place of service and you’re seeking consent at every level. If they don’t reply and engage at any level, go back to the previous one to better earn their trust.
Also, remember that every interaction will be different, so keep going until you find the person that’s ready for what you have to offer.
