How I’ve Embraced My Failures on my Path to Heightened Success & Serious Growth

In this post, I want to talk about failures that redirect you to something better. This is something that I really believe in, and one of my favorite mantras is, “this or something better.” 

This quote has served me very well in both business and in my personal life, and I want to dig deeper into what that means today.

A Letter to the Old Me 

As an exercise to help me grow and level up to a stronger and better version of myself, I wrote a letter to myself. After writing it, I burnt it as a symbolic gesture of letting go of that old version of me.

In the letter, I acknowledged all that the old version of me had done and that I am so proud of her. I shared my gratitude for the old me, and also noted that it’s time for me to make space for the new version of myself.

I’ve changed in so many ways, and — in short — my actions need to align with the new version of myself. Putting pen to paper and noting the specific things I needed to release allowed me to really breathe a sigh of relief and feel as though a weight was lifted when I set fire to those words. It was an emotional and scary moment to write this letter, but it was sooo worth it.

Not Taking On the Identity of Your Failures

Part of writing that letter and letting go of my old self meant letting go of any failures or mistakes I experienced in my past. This is so important because it’s easy to take on your mistakes and failures as a personal thing. Making them part of your identity can easily happen, but doing so can be damaging to the way you show up for your business or in your life.

Think about it this way – maybe you did something stupid or made a stupid mistake, but that doesn’t make you a stupid person, right? 

Instead, we need to think of our failures and mistakes as a lesson. I have several failures that redirected me to something even better, which I’m going to share below.

Not Recognizing the Time to Leave BeachBody 

In 2016, I had a banner year with BeachBody. It was the year I got married, I made a lot of money and had very little overhead. Business-wise, it was just an amazing time for me.

But even so, I started having a gut feeling that it was time to pursue something new. I pushed that away and I got married and Mike and I went on a four-month road trip. 

By the time the road trip was over, BeachBody made a change where they went completely digital. That meant that the income structure had changed, and I could no longer make a commission from selling the BeachBody DVDs. 

This was a significant cut in my income, and I found I had to work so hard to get that income back. I was forced to make a change that I’d been thinking about for at least a year because my livelihood was being threatened.

But this ended up being a great thing because it forced me to take action and start my own business. In just six months after that, I had replaced my income. It was tough to start over mentally, emotionally, and with my income, but it ended up being better than I ever could have imagined.

 

Separating from My Husband

In January of 2020, my husband and I decided to separate. We had been working with a relationship coach, but then I felt like a failure when we ultimately decided it was time to separate because things in our relationship weren’t improving.

This was so hard for both of us and at the time felt like the end of the world. We knew that there was a large chance that we wouldn’t make it as a couple if we separated, but that we had to do it for our marriage.

Thank goodness, it ended up being the BEST thing for us. We now have a completely different marriage in the best of ways. We still work on things — just like every couple does — but I really don’t think we’d be together to this day and in such a great place if we hadn’t separated. I’m so grateful for this new version of us, and it really shows how a perceived failure can redirect you to an amazing place.

Launching My Unique Coaching Method Course

In May of 2021, I was so excited to launch my Unique Coaching Method Course and Membership. I spent a ton of money on the program and was convinced it was going to be a slam dunk.

74 people joined the program – which I am SO grateful for. But I was also kind of disappointed because I had expected 250 people to join. The program didn’t make a ton of profit and I just felt like it was a failure at that moment.

But, then I stepped back and learned from what went wrong. From there, I eventually realized that this program — with the tweaks I had made — needed to be a part of one of my other programs.

From there, my Smart Online Success Academy was born. This program has been running for about three months, it’s been a true slam dunk, and I’m really loving it. This wouldn’t have happened without the “failed” program, and I’m so grateful that I see that now!

Trust In the Process: The Bottom Line

If you’re going through a hard time right now or going through a transition, trust that it’s happening for a reason. It’s all leading you to something better, and you’re a different version of yourself now than you were before. What got you here won’t get you to your next level. We’re all learning that on a continual basis, so I hope sharing these stories has helped you recognize what failures you yourself have experienced that have led you to something even better.
